The script is newly adapted from the novel by local director and dramatist Gerald Maloy. The songs were written for the 1973 Reader's Digest film production by the Academy Award winning team of Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman (Mary Poppins) who were again Academy-nominated in 1974 for the song score of Tom Sawyer. In an unprecedented, generous, and gracious move, Richard M. Sherman has granted Mr. Maloy permission to use these songs in this special stage adaptation. River Song catches the spirit of 1830's Hannibal, Missouri, with songs including the poignant title tune 'River Song', 'Free-Bootin', and the toe-tapping 'Gratification'.
